Fast Facts About Breast CancerThe incidence of breast cancer in the U.S. has tripled since the 1940's. Then, the lifetime risk for women was 1 in 22; today, that risk is 1 in 8. When all risk factors and personal characteristics (including hereditary factors, early onset of menstruation, late menopause, no children or breast-feeding, smoking, obesity, and low physical activity) are added together, more than 50% of breast cancer cases remain explained. An estimated 85,000 synthetic chemicals are registered for use today in the U.S., yet more than 90 percent have never been fully tested for their effects on human health. There is strong evidence linking some of these chemicals to breast cancer. These chemicals are in the food we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe. Rather than wait for proof that may be decades in coming, it is time to act on this evidence now and reduce cancer-causing chemicals in our bodies and our environment. About The Breast Cancer FundIn response to the public health crisis of breast cancer, The Breast Cancer Fund identifies - and advocates for elimination of - the environmental and other preventable causes of the disease. |
